As soon as the lights go out in the Kleberg Theater im Zach, the audience is transported into the world of Charles M. Schulz. “A Charlie Brown Christmas” returns to the Austin stage and delivers everything you want from a holiday performance. It is a joyful, energetic experiential celebration that lights up the entire theater.
A small tree and a lot of heart
The young cast doesn’t just follow in the footsteps of the Peanuts gang. They dance, laugh and sing across the stage with such infectious enthusiasm that the audience can simply be carried away. Charlie Turner delivers a beautifully layered performance as Charlie Brown, filled with both vulnerability and spirit. Matthew Kennedy as Snoopy turns every scene into a party. His comic timing and physicality elicit uproarious laughter and constant applause. His performance alone could carry the show, but each role adds spark.
Hannah-Marie Smith as Lucy keeps the audience on the edge of their seats, while Kyra Jackson’s Sally is energetic and charming. Schroeder, Linus, Pig Pen and the entire ensemble fill the room with movement and charisma. Even the smallest gestures are carried out with intention and charm.
The atmosphere is pure joy, as the holiday atmosphere neither seems forced nor staged. It pulsates through the theater in waves. From one song to the next, the energy never lets up. In fact, it builds up. And just when you think the show has reached its sweet conclusion, the cast delivers another musical moment. As soon as the curtain fell, the lights came back on and the sing-along began. Parents sing, children clap, and strangers sway side by side. It is simple and yet incredibly beautiful.
